Jim Jim woke up early that morning, had a quick cup of coffee, very dark, for he liked it that way, and went on his way to work. He drove a truck. A Ford pickup. American bred, just like Jim. His work was construction and he liked his work, even at six o’clock on a Monday morning before the sun had even risen. Jim always felt that a man ought to work his hardest and only felt satisfied when he came home smelly, dirty, and exhausted to a nice, big meal from his wife. As Jim thought of this, Jim suddenly felt a pang of nostalgia for his good old days as a child helping his pa in the construction business, but as quickly as it began, it passed and Jim went back to work, his course fingers gripping his old, worn out hammer with newfound determination and resolve. The hammer was an old model bought from the local shop owned by Billy Palmer. Jim could still remember when he bought the hammer. He could still feel Billy’s breath, with the faint smell of whiskey in the air, as Billy leaned in close to Jim and said "This is the damn best hammer you ever gonna find. Its gonna last you damn near a lifetime. " Billy’s store no longer existed. Neither did Billy, who just moved away one day, not saying goodbye to anyone. Jim missed Billy. Not Billy the man, but Billy the memory. The memory of Jim0s childhood before all of this new technology. Modernism, they called it. Jim didn’t like modernism. He liked the good-old days. Jim remembered that he had a job to do and stopped thinking. Too much thinking was bad in a job like construction. It threw you off track, like a curveball from Bob Gibson did back in the day. Today Jim had to remodel the bathroom of a floor. He worked very methodically, taking his time with every little detail. There was no rush for Jim because Jim knew that the worst type of job is a rushed job. He could still remember when he did his first job with his dad. It was a cold day. The wind chilled you to the bone. It had snowed the previous night so the whole town was a luminous shade of white. As Jim and his dad drove to the construction site, his dad gave him, what Jim thought, was the best advice anyone ever gave to him. "Son" said Jim’s dad in that husky, gruff voice that Jim could so clearly hear in his mind, even to this day "The most important thing in construction is to take your time. There is no worse feeling than a poorly done job." Then Jim’s dad turned on the radio and the smooth sounds of Elvis Presley filled the car as dad and son drove on through the gleaming white town. Eventually Jim finished the floor. It sparkled like like a precious jewel gleaming in the sun. The new tiles looked splendid when compared with the blue wallpaper on the walls. Jim admired his work for a second, and then lit a cigarette. He knew that Margaret didnt like when he smoked, and he tried to stop, He really did try, but the allure of the cigarette was too appealing for him. Jim slowly walked back to his truck, the precious blue smoke making lazy circles above his head. Jim savored this part of his job. He knew he had accomplished something tangible, something real. This was what drove Jim on. He had done something that people could admire years after he was gone. Jim drove home a happy, content man. This is supposed to be a story following the theme of realism.
